Foods and Habits for Fall Dryness

By late September, fall dryness has usually made itself known: chapped lips, a scratchy throat, skin that suddenly needs more attention. It is one of the most common patterns I see this time of year, and food can make a real difference.

Why Water Alone Does Not Fix It

Hydration matters, but plain water does not always solve fall dryness on its own. In Chinese medicine, this pattern reflects a depletion of yin fluids, the moistening, cooling substance in the body. Building that back up is less about volume and more about the right kind of nourishment.

Foods That Moisten

  • Pears.
The classic fall food. They moisten the Lungs and soothe a dry throat, raw, baked, or steamed with a little honey.

  • Honey.
Gentle and moistening, stirred into warm water or tea.

  • White foods.
Daikon, cauliflower, white beans, and tofu are traditionally associated with the Lungs and tend to be light and moistening.

  • Sesame seeds and walnuts.
Nourishing for fluids, sprinkled over food or eaten as a small daily snack.

  • Warm soups and congee.
Cooked, moist food is easier to use than raw or dry food right now.

Habits Worth Adding

  • Ease off very spicy, pungent food for a few weeks, it can be drying.

  • Run a humidifier at night if your space tends to be dry.

  • Moisturize skin right after showering, while it is still damp.

  • Favor warm drinks over iced ones.

A Simple Place to Start

If you make one change this week, make it pears. Steamed, baked, or plain, they are the easiest way to support the Lungs through this transition.
