The Metal Element and Letting Go
Feeling more inward lately, maybe a little more emotional than usual? You are not imagining it. Fall belongs to the Metal element, and Metal has a particular energy that shows up whether we notice it or not.
What Metal Governs
Metal connects to the Lungs and Large Intestine, which often means dryness this time of year: dry skin, dry lips, a lingering dry cough that never turns into a real cold. The Lungs are usually the first system to register that summer has loosened its grip. Metal also carries an emotional quality: grief. Not necessarily grief tied to a specific loss, but a quieter, more diffuse poignancy. The light softens, the days shorten, and the body responds before the mind catches up.
The Exhale of the Year
I think of fall as the exhale of the year. Spring is the inhale, summer the breath held at the top. Fall asks us to release, to let go of what served its purpose and make room for what is next. That is also why Metal governs refinement and boundaries. Metal cuts, shapes, and separates the useful from the useless. You may feel a stronger pull to clear out a closet, finish a lingering project, or say no to plans that no longer fit. That is Metal doing its job.
Working With the Season
The mistake I see most often is pushing through the pull toward quiet instead of honoring it.
A few ways to work with it instead:
Give yourself permission to say no to one thing this month.
Respond to dryness, physical or emotional, with warmth and moisture rather than more stimulation.
Let a quieter mood be information, not a problem.
Fall does not ask you to do more. It asks you to release what you no longer need so there is room to breathe.
